Celebrities Uncork the Wine Business

Forget clothing lines: More celebrities seem to be putting their stamp on wine. Singer Fergie just released her Ferguson Crest libations, from the Santa Barbara winery she founded with her father in 2006. Actress Drew Barrymore recently unveiled her Barrymore Pinot Grigio, which hails from the Triveneto area of Italy. She plans to launch more wines down the line.

Then there’€™s Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who are launching a rosé called Miraval from their French chateau with whites to follow. The movie star couple appears to be off to a good start with their wine venture: The rosé reportedly sold 6,000 bottles via online orders within six hours on March 7.

Stars getting involved with wine isn’€™t new. Director Francis Ford Coppola has been a serious winemaker for years. Ramona Singer of ” Real Housewives of New York City,” launched a wine a few years ago, while her former castmate Bethenny Frankel is behind the Skinnygirl wine and spirits empire.

The difference with some of the newer entrants is that the bigger stars may be more concerned about quality products, says Gwendolyn Osborn, Wine.com’s director of education and content. “A reality TV star may not be as focused on quality as they are on brand image, where a serious movie artist may be more likely to invest more into producing something of substance.’€
