Mezcales de Leyenda Limited-Edition Mezcals Now Available in 15 States

Mezcales de Leyenda has announced the release of four limited-release mezcals that each benefit a specific social or environmental cause.

Mezcales Únicos is the first release in a series of mezcals that offer collectors the opportunity to experience an agave that had never been distilled before for the first time, the company says. To kick-off series, Mezcales de Leyenda has selected the agave montana, which grows in a valley in the Sierra Madre Oriental in Tamaulipas. The result is aromas of deep char and damp forest, the company reports, and flavors of sweet menthol. A portion of sales proceeds will be donated to aid in the cultivation and conservation of this agave species. The suggested retail price is $499.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

Reservas de la Biosfera: Tehuacán-Cuicatlán is the first release in a series of mezcals dedicated to important national parks in Mexico. This mezcal comes from the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán reserve at the southern limits of Puebla with Oaxaca in the largest cactus reserve in the world. This mezcal is produced with a base of regional magueys, agave marmorata and agave macrocantha in collaboration with the Ortega family, who are
mezcaleros from the region with three generations of experience between them. A portion of sales
proceeds of this mezcal that features aromas of sweet cooked agave and sea water, and a flavor profile
that exhibits mineral and slight notes of peat, will be donated to the conservation of regional cactacea in
collaboration with local groups. The suggested retail price is $319.99per 750-ml. bottle.

Cementerio Mezcalero (Mezcal Graveyard) is the first release in a series of mezcals that honors an old tradition in which mezcals are aged in glass, generally underground, to be later unearthed for family celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, and baptisms. This mezcal features aromas of roasted chestnuts and dried fruits, the company reports, and a flavor profile that exhibits buttery notes and mild smoke with a long finish. A portion of sales proceeds of this mezcal will be donated to purchase tourism equipment for Tzitzio, Michoacán, to
promote the ‘desentierros mezcaleros’ (mezcal unearthing) traditionally held during the celebration of Día
de Muertos (Day of the Dead). The suggested retail price is $279.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

Grandes Leyendas: Don Anastacio is the first release in a series of mezcals that “recognizes great master mezcaleros over the age of 70.” For the inaugural product, Mezcales de Leyenda celebrates Don Anastacio, who created this mezcal using wild agave cupreata from northern Guerrero. This mezcal features aromas of mature tropical fruits, orange blossom and light smoke, the company says, with a palate that exhibits bittersweet chocolate and orange peel. A portion of sales proceeds of this mezcal will be donated directly to Don Anastacio and his family. The suggested retail price is $249.99 per 750-ml. bottle.
