Robert Mondavi Private Selection has unveiled its Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine originates in the coastal vineyards of Monterey County, CA. Grapes are picked at the peak of ripeness, after which the wine is aged and blended to deliver fruit flavors and complexity.
A portion of the blend is aged for an additional three months using a combination of new and used Kentucky Bourbon barrels, creating one of the first Bourbon barrel aged wines produced in the United States.
Bourbon barrels are 100% American oak barrels that have been charred to help impart deep toasty flavors and hints of vanilla and brown sugar. Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly suited for Bourbon barrel aging, the company says, because its rich fruit character isn’t overwhelmed by the flavors of the charred casks.
This wine is rich, full-bodied on the palette, and the 2014 vintage delivers flavors of black cherry and blackberry.
The Robert Mondavi Private Selection Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon will be released in limited-production and is available nationally now. Suggested retail price is $13.99 for a 750-mL bottle.
We purchased the Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in bourbon barrels, for Valentine’s Day. I am not a wine connoisseur, but I really loved the after taste. The first taste came on a little strong, but it left an amazing flavor on the palette.
[…] one-off distinctive product from Mondavi is not going to change the way people view that winery. However, a winery like The Scholium Project […]
I just shared a bottle of the RM bourbon barrel Cab with a friend and her response was ‘This is the best wine I’ve ever tasted.” We are both advocates of bourbon barrel beer so this is a great find. Hope to see more of this – I would’ve purchased many more if they were available at the store.
I have just come back home after visiting Sacramento and found a bottle in Target.I know it’s target for wine.It was so good I am now trying to find it locally.
