High West Valley Tan Whiskey

High West Distillery has unveiled Valley Tan – a whiskey inspired by the spirit distilled in Utah by Mormon pioneers, the company says.

Beginning this week, this special bottling is available exclusively to visitors at the High West Distillery in Wanship, Utah, followed by a rollout at the High West Saloon in historic Old Town Park City on August 6.

Valley Tan is High West’s own distillate and was its first aged whiskey for sale. In this third release, High West changed the original oat-based formulation after finding a historical reference on whiskey production from the famed 19th century explorer Sir Richard Burton, the company says.

“We’re taking a big step back in history and transitioning much of the mash bill to a wheat based recipe,” said Brendan Coyle, High West Master Distiller. “The majority of all the wheat used in the mash is coming from the northwestern corner of Utah. We’re thrilled to bring Valley Tan that much closer to home.”

Valley Tan is the historic name of the whiskey that the Mormons made from 1850 to about 1870. The name originally referred to leather “tanned” by Mormon pioneers. Eventually it applied to anything not imported, in other words “homemade.”

Valley Tan retails for $49.95 per 750-ml. bottle.
