Templeton Rye Spirits has officially opened their new 34,500-square-foot, $35-million distillery in Templeton, Iowa. Work first began back in April of 2017.
Introduced legally in 2006, the rye whiskey brand Templeton dates back to early-1920s bootlegging in Iowa. The new distillery will allow Templeton Rye to be produced wholly in Iowa for the first time since the Prohibition era.
The whiskey that is currently distilling in Iowa will be ready for market four years from today, the company says.
After the Templeton Rye is distilled, aged and finished, it will be bottled at the Templeton facility. With the opening of this distillery, Templeton Rye brings all parts of the whiskey-making process back to Templeton, where it started decades ago.
The current Templeton Rye product available for sale on shelves across the U.S. was distilled and aged in Indiana, then finished and bottled in Iowa.
Since April 2016, Templeton Rye has introduced two new products: a whiskey aged for six years, and a 10th anniversary product with limited-edition serial numbers labeled on the bottles. Also, the brand’s signature 4-Year-Old Whiskey is now available nationwide in a 1-liter bottle.
Another product will be introduced at the grand opening event: a Special Reserve 6 Year Old whiskey that was aged in Templeton.
