Volage Sparkling AOP Crémant de Loire Rosé

Volage is a new sparkling AOP Crémant de Loire Rosé made from 100% old-vines cabernet franc using “methode traditionelle.” It will launch this spring through new east coast distribution with Regal Wine Imports in New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania, Highland Imports in Connecticut, Hogshead Wine Co. in Massachusetts and Greystone Partners in Florida.

The suggested retail price is $29.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

Volage comes from industry veteran François-Xavier Chaillou, who wanted to make “the best quality, affordable sparkling rosé” outside of the famous region. He chose the Loire Valley, which is closest in latitude and known for both rosé wine and sparkling wine using “methode traditionelle,” called Crémant de Loire.

He paired up with Loire specialist, Chris Hardy of Charles Sydney Wines Ltd. After months of scouting, Chaillou discovered Domaine du Landreau in Val du Layon, a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department of western France. This property was planted with cabernet franc vines averaging 25 years old under management using sustainable practices, the company says. Its soil is primarily sandy silt loam.

Teaming up with Winemaker Elodie Battais and with consultant Patrick Léon, cabernet franc grapes undergo a short maceration to obtain the “oeil de Perdrix” pale salmon pink color of Volage and then undergo aging at three years on lees (sedimentary yeast). Volage is a Brut Sauvage low dosage (3 g/L).
