As the tequila category continues to trend, Tequila Don Julio has produced a second bottling of its highly allocated, super-premium Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva.

This release is meant to honor the brand’s late founder, Don Julio González. This expression is made with the final agave harvest planted by González and his family in 2006, reserved for this distillation.

“It’s been ten years since the passing of our late founder Don Julio González, and we are proud to honor his legacy by releasing the second bottling of Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva,” says Christina Choi, Senior Vice President of Tequila, Diageo North America. “This liquid is truly so rare and special that we’re continuing to release Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva in highly limited quantities each year, allowing us to preserve Don Julio González’s ultimate legacy as long as possible.”

Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva is a 36-month-aged extra añejo. To preserve this tequila and the agave piñas behind it, the team at Tequila Don Julio implemented a Solera aging method, which combines and matures tequilas of different characteristics and cask finishes, allowing the final agave harvest to remain at the heart of this tequila, the company says.

Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva ages in ex-bourbon oak barrels, before finishing in Madeira wine-seasoned casks.

The result is a nose of toasted oak and caramel, followed by hints of apricot and orange, before finishing with honeyed agave, the company reports.

Last year, only 4,000 cases of the first batch of Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva rolled out. An extremely limited number of cases are available for 2022, while supplies last. Each bottle comes labeled to mark the year’s harvest.

The suggested retail price is $499 for a 750-ml. bottle.
