The newest releases from Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum are the 1993 and 2002 single marque pot-still rums as part of the Hearts Collection.
Both bottles debut today in the U.S.
These expressions are the sixth and seventh addition to the collection of rare rums, which are released annually.
As the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in Jamaica, Appleton Estate created the Hearts Collection, including this year’s releases, to highlight the depth and flavors in advanced-aged rums. This limited-edition series was selected by Master Blender Joy Spence.
The 1993 and 2002 vintages from this year’s Hearts Collection are each comprised of a single proprietary marque distilled in a Forsyth Pot Still and aged 29 and 20 tropical years, respectively.
“Rums aged in tropical climates develop richer, fuller flavors much more quickly than spirits aged at cooler climates, so when you taste a rum aged for over 20 years like our new releases from the Hearts Collection, it’s a really extraordinary experience.” says Spence. “I had long dreamed of releasing single vintage selections from Appleton Estate, so it’s been amazing to see the warm reception the Hearts Collection releases receive year after year, all around the world.”
The Hearts Collection 1993 opens with aromas nutmeg and cinnamon, with hints of mint, warm butterscotch, toasted oak and honeyed vanilla, the company reports. The suggested retail price is $300. In the Hearts Collection 2002, you’ll find notes of orange blossoms wrapped with molasses, warm vanilla, medium roasted coffee and caramel, with a honeyed taste on the palate. The suggested retail price is $220.
The 1993 and 2002 expressions come from just 13 and 20 barrels respectively.
The debut Hearts Collection vintages, named to pay tribute to the heart of Jamaica, came in 2020 and were the first pot-still rums from a single barrel that Appleton Estate had ever released. These limited-edition expressions and subsequent releases have sold out in a matter of minutes. To date, there have been seven releases from the Hearts Collection 1994, 1995, 1999, 1984, 2003, 1993 and 2002.
The Hearts Collection 1993 and 2002 will be available on ReserveBar and in select spirits retail outlets in global markets starting in February 2023.
