Yoshino Spirits Co. has added Umiki Whisky to its portfolio.
The Japanese whisky brand calls itself “the World’s First Ocean Fused Whisky,” after a step in the production process that involves oceanwater.
Filtered desalinated oceanwater from the Pacific ocean is blended with Japanese ocean-side distilled malt whiskies and grain whiskies in reserve after the curation is finished in Japanese pine barrels.
This process gives Umiki its name, whereby umi means “ocean” and ki means “tree” in Japanese.
This sustainable process brings smoothness with sea-breeze on the nose, the company reports, rounded floral taste on the palate and a freshness in the finish.
