Virginia Distillery Company (VDC) has announced the launch of its Double Cask Reserve, the latest addition to their Courage & Conviction American Single Malt line.
Made in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Double Cask Reserve contains whiskies aged for a minimum of five years in first-fill bourbon casks and STR European red wine Cuvée casks, before being vatted together in a marriage. This offering has no additives, and is non-chill filtered. It comes bottled at 96 proof.
The final result is aromas of bright citrus, apricot and butterscotch, the company reports, before a palate of tart cherry with milk chocolate, and a finish of lingering ginger spice.
“We couldn’t be more excited to share with the world the latest addition to our Courage & Conviction line: a vibrant whisky that fits beautifully within our collection,” says Virginia Distillery Company CEO Gareth H. Moore. “With this release, we feel we’ve set a new standard for American Whisky — a category that is soon to be officially recognized by the TTB.”
In July 2022, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for its intent to establish American Single Malt Whiskey as a protected category within the Standards of Identity of American Whiskey.
While Virginia Distillery Company awaits this official category ratification, it will continue releasing new whiskies, as its standards and practices fit within all of the whisky production criteria set forth by the TTB for the proposed new definition of American Single Malt whisky, the company says.
Virginia Distillery Company Double Cask Reserve retails for a suggested price of $89.99 per 750-ml. bottle. This American Single Malt, along with the rest of the Courage & Conviction line, is available at retailers and can also be ordered online at courageandconviction.com.
