Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye is a 10-year-old rye whiskey hitting shelves nationwide in limited quantities this fall.
This new expression aged in a single, escalator-style warehouse before being bottled, unfiltered, at cask strength (121 proof).
Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye was barreled in the winter and autumn seasons of 2012, and laid down in one of the few remaining “Escalator Warehouses” in Clermont, KY — Warehouse V. This goal with this style of warehousing was for consistency and “gentle mellowing” over time for the small batch of barrels in this release, the distillery says.
The result is an aroma of mellowed oak, sweet corn and vanilla underpinned by warm black pepper and cinnamon-toast spice, according to distillery notes. On the palate is flavors of brown sugar and honey, with notes of leather and charred oak, before a finish of lingering rye spice and vanilla.
The suggested retail price is $99.99 per 750-ml. bottle.
