Diageo and Thin Film Unveil ‘Smart Bottle’

Smart bottle
Smart bottle

It’s a natural transition: smartphone, smart car, smart TV, and now a ‘smart bottle’.

JW_Blue_Smart_Bottle_2Diageo and Thin Film Electronics ASA, a developer of printed electronics and smart systems, will reveal a prototype Johnnie Walker Blue Label smart bottle at the March 2-5 Mobile World Congress.

This bottle uses printed sensor tags featuring Thinfilm’s OpenSense technology, which can detect both the sealed and opened state of each bottle.

The tags and sensor info will allow Diageo to send personalized communications to consumers who read the tags with their smartphones. These messages can include promotional offers, cocktail recipes and other exclusive content.

Thinfilm’s proprietary and patent-pending technology makes use of smartphones’ Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities. The technology allows Diageo to track bottle movements across the supply chain, in-store and to the point of consumption. Tags remain readable even when the factory seal has been broken, providing an additional layer of security in protecting the authenticity of the product.

Unlike conventional QR codes, OpenSense tags can detect if a bottle is sealed or open with the simple tap of an NFC smartphone. To ensure authenticity, the tags are also encoded at the point of manufacture and cannot be copied or electrically modified.

Sky Ranch Foundation Donates $25,000 For At-Risk Children

Sky Ranch Foundation and Sky Ranch for Boys have donated $25,000 for Florida children in need.

The grant was awarded to Voices for Children of North Central Florida, Inc. This non-profit organization raises money for children involved in the dependency court system: kids who have allegedly been abused, abandoned or neglected.

Founded in 1995, Voices was created to support the quality of care for children under the auspices of the Guardian Ad Litem Program and the Fifth Judicial Court of Florida. At the request of a guardian, Voices may provide staples like sneakers, clothes, diapers as well as funding for more serious specialized medical treatment or psychological evaluations and counseling.

More than 2,000 children in North Central Florida find themselves victims of physical abuse, neglect or abandonment and are usually moved from their homes for a period of time, according to a press release.

“Voices . . . is extremely grateful for the sizable grant awarded to our organization to provide normalcy activities for the children in our circuit,” said Sue Carpenter, President of Voices. “These funds allow [these] children . . . to participate in clubs, on teams and at events they would otherwise be excluded from pursuing.”

Since 2011, Sky Ranch Foundation has awarded $922,394 in grants to organizations providing support for at-risk youth. Formed in 1961 and building on more than 50 years of tradition, Sky Ranch Foundation is a tax-exempt charitable organization committed to identifying and offering grants to efficient and effective programs focused on improving the quality of help available to these youth.

Sky Ranch Foundation is governed by a board of directors comprised mainly of active and retired members of the beverage alcohol industry. The Foundation’s funds have come largely from individuals and companies associated with the beer, wine and spirits industries and reflects the industry’s great concern and commitment for at-risk youth.

A Blog about Glogg

It’s been very cold in New England for weeks now, so last night seemed like the perfect time to open up a bottle of Glogg (a Scandavian mulled wine) I bought a few months ago. My wife and I heated it up on the stove for a few minutes and drank it warm in an Irish Coffee glass. This particular Glogg was from Boyden Valley Winery in Cambridge, VT (12% ABV, $18.99).

gloggphotobigAs I’ve said before, I’m not a wine expert, but the mix of spices was just right after a cold day and provided the kick that’s sorely missing from hot cocoa. It’s a great after dinner drink and would pair well with a variety of desserts, but could also be served with small appetizers. When I first tasted Glogg a couple years ago in Vermont it was served out of a crock pot, which the winery used to keep the wine at an ideal temperature all day.

Customers may not be lining up at your doors to buy specialty products like Glogg, but serving a warm wine at your next tasting event might be the memorable experience that makes your store stand out and keeps them coming back.

What non-traditional beer, wine and spirit products do you keep in stock and recommend to customers who want to branch out from mass-market categories?

Double Barrel Irish Whiskey

Glendalough Irish Whiskey had announced the launch of the company’s new Double Barrel Irish Whiskey.

Glendalough’s new whiskey offering is crafted in small batches from a mash of malted barley and corn. It is aged in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels and progresses to double age in first-fill Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. The cask-strength whiskey is cut with mountain spring water with a high mineral content from the surrounding Wicklow Mountains before bottling.

The Double Barrel has aromas of cherries, raisins, and figs balanced by floral lemongrass and a touch of nutmeg.
