1970 Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky

1970 Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

The Last Drop Distillers, a Sazerac brand that seeks out parcels of rare spirits from around the world, has announced its eighteenth release: the 1970 Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

These 1970 single casks complete the trilogy of Glenrothes Single Malts. The first, from 1968, was released in 2018, while the second, from 1969, came out in 2019.

On Dec. 6, 1970, Speyside distillery Glenrothes, in the Scottish Highlands, filled three neighboring casks. They rested for 50 years until The Last Drop Distillers bottled them in January of 2020. Cask No 10586 yielded 103 bottles, Cask No 16207 produced 87 sets and Cask No 10589 filled 96 bottles, making a total of 286 bottles available worldwide.

Despite being neighboring casks, the alchemy that happens between distillate, the surrounding airs and the wood has resulted in three similar-yet-different whiskies, the company reports. Thus, The Last Drop Distillers has chosen to bottle each of these “sibling casks” separately.

Leading whisky writer Jim Murray shares his tasting notes for the three expressions. For Cask no. 10586 he states that “the taste is delicate, the spices make their way forward, meeting little resistance from elsewhere.” Cask no. 10588 “is a delicious and highly unusual mix between eggnog and bourbon.” Finally, Cask no. 10589 “is so silky and salivating, and the good news is that despite the oaky intervention, the malt can still be enjoyed to the full.”

The ABV of Cask No 10586 is 45.3%; Cask No 10588 is 44.1%; and Cask No 10589 is 45%.

As with all of The Last Drop releases, each bottle comes packaged with its 50-ml. miniature replica and pocket-sized tasting book with additional pages for personal tasting notes.

The suggested retail price for these releases is $6,250 each.
